Opiate addictions requires a medically supervised detox to remove the withdrawal symptoms associated with each particular opiate. Heroin, Methadone and Oxycontin use causes strong physical dependence therefore opiate detox runs the risk of serious complications if the use of heroin, methadone, or oxycontin is stopped abruptly. “Cold Turkey” opiate-based-detox, (stopped abruptly with zero medication) and the associated withdrawal symptoms can include seizures, heart irregularities, vomiting, insomnia, sneezing, running nose, watery eyes, depression, suicidal ideations, high anxiety and much more. Heroin withdrawal symptoms in average heroin abusers may occur as quickly as a few hours after last administration, regardless if it is smoked, snorted or injected. The half-life of heroin averages six hours. That means 50 percent of the drug will have metabolized in six hours leaving fifty percent still in the system; after twelve hours there will be approximately 25 percent of the drug still in the system; eighteen hours later approximately 12.5 percent of the drug will remain. So the average heroin addict must use between three and four times daily just to maintain a sense of balance or comfort. Additional symptoms associated with opiate withdrawal may include; drug craving, restlessness, irritability, muscle aches, bone and joint pain, diarrhea, cold flashes (sometimes called cold sweats), goose bumps, restless leg syndrome, and an overall feeling of impending doom.
